Physician Bio: Dr. Dowling is a 1989 graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of the New York Institute of Technology. He is a contributing author and illustrator for all editions of An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment and an editor on the last edition. He has also illustrated journal articles and textbooks, most notably The Encyclopedia of Osteopathy and Easy EMG edited by Weiss, Silver and Weiss. He has authored several articles and book chapters, including on an osteopathic technique he has developed, Progressive Inhibition of Neuromuscular Structures (PINS) in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine, Chaitow’s Modern Neuromuscular Techniques, and An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment. He is a co-author of a JAOA Northup writing award-winning article on the effect of osteopathic manipulative treatment on gait in Parkinson’s. As an expert on OMT, Dr. Dowling has taught at many of the colleges of osteopathic medicine, and at educational programs both nationally and in Europe and Japan. He has delivered the 2001 David Heilig, D.O., F.A.A.O. Memorial Lecture at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, the 2004 Scott Memorial lecture at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine of A.T. Still University, the 2005 T.L. Northup Memorial Lecture, and the 2010 Harold A. Blood, D.O., F.A.A.O. Memorial Lecture.
Dr. Dowling is a former professor and chairman of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and holds the rank of Clinical Professor at the Mid-Western University Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has been in private practice in Syosset, New York since 2003. He is a consultant and the Director of OMM Assessment for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners COMLEX-PE examination. Since 1990, Dr. Dowling has supervised residents in a clinic at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, Long Island.
Dr. Dowling received certification in OMM in 1995 from the American Osteopathic Board for Special Proficiency in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (AOBSPOMM) and was recertified in 2004 by the American Osteopathic Board for Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/OMM. He was certified in Osteopathic Family Practice in 1997 and recertified in 2005. His F.A.A.O. fellowship was earned in 1999. He has served on the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) Board of Trustees (1998-2003), was AAO President (2003-2004), as well as a member and chair on several other AAO committees. He is the former chairman of the AOA Committee on Osteopathic History (1999 - 2005) and former vice-chairman of the Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles. Dr. Dowling is a member of the certifying board for Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNMM/OMM).
