20140201 draft Very Brief Biography Jacob Sperber, M.D. Jacob Sperber, M.D. has been a psychiatry residency training director for thirteen years, and is currently the Vice Chair for Education & Training, and the Residency Training Director, in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), East Meadow, New York. In addition to overseeing the psychiatry residency, two psychiatry fellowships, and medical student rotations from three medical schools, he also heads the curricula for interviewing and for psychotherapies training, and lectures on the neurobiology of addiction. Under his leadership in 2007 and in 2013 the NUMC residency program twice received the maximum ACGME accreditation of five years, with commendations. He has also chaired or co-chaired many institutional committees, including the hospitals Competencies and Curricula Committee, the APAs IMG Institute, and the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatrys Global Psychiatry Committee. His is the founding Associate Director of the von Tauber Institute for Global Psychiatry, Licensed to practice in New York and California, he graduated from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1975, completed psychiatry residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1979, and has his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, 1968. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, where he received the Residency Teaching Award in 2005. In 2013 he received the APAs Irma Bland award in recognition of outstanding and sustained contributions to resident education. He is co-author of a chapter on General Hospitals in the Alcoholism Treatment System, with Marc Galanter, M.D. He is a frequent presenter at national and international meetings, including presentations on the neurobiology of addiction, and on the positive functions of anxiety, at the International Society for Systems Science, in Waterloo, Canada in 2010, and at the Research Centre for Literature, Arts, and Sciences in Cardiff, Wales, in 2009. In 2010 he gave 3 presentations on the Internet and Psychiatry, at the APA, AADPRT, and as invited speaker at the Washington State Psychiatric Association. In 2013, as a trained trainer for the APA he delivered DSM5 training for the Greater Long Island Psychiatric Society.
